Health Tips
Diarrhea is one of the most common problems for Western travelers in Thailand and other developing countries. It is caused by one or more of a long list of bacteria, viruses and parasites via the contamination of food or drinks you consumed.
To minimize your risk:
- Eat food served steaming hot and cooked rather than food left out on the tray or in au bain-marie dishes. Amongst fruit, choose those that need to be peeled (like bananas or oranges) rather than those you eat with the skin intact (like apples), unless you can wash them. Bread is usually safe.
- Choose carbonated drinks like Coca Cola over freshly squeezed juices or locally produced drinks along the roadside.
- Avoid salads, uncooked fresh vegetables and all shellfish.
- Drinks with ice cubes or ice tubes are safe, drinks made with crushed ice or ice chipped from ice blocks are not.
- Do not drink tap water.
If you develop diarrhea and vomiting, drink more water than you did before. Dehydration is particular the main cause, especially for children. If the symptoms persist for more than one day or get really violent, take them to a doctor. In your own case, you should get medical advise immediately if you notice blood or mucous in your diarrhea and of course if the symptoms persist for more than one day or get really violent.
Happy Holidays!
