Samui Profile

The following is an extract of an interview between Dennis Ogilvie, the owner of Audio Visual Interior Design (AVID) and Suzanne Buchanan of Samui Explorer.

Samui Explorer:
Where do you come from, how long have you been here on Samui and what brought you here in the first place?

Dennis:
I am Scottish though I've lived all around the world anywhere that's warmer than the cold Scottish climate. I first came to Samui 3 years ago and instantly felt at home. I couldn't find a suitable business here on the island so after a year here I went back to London to pick up a successful internet based company that I could run from anywhere in the world. Then I came back to Samui to set up a call centre for the UK based company selling audio and visual equipment on line and then expanded into the Thai market by creating www.1staudiovisual.co.th.

Samui Explorer:
What services do AVID offer to locals, expatriates and businesses here on the island?

Dennis:
There are three main services that we provide: Audio Visual whether a TV cheaper than available elsewhere on the island or a complete home/bar installation. Our price, professionalism and service can not be beaten..!!!

Interior Design we offer developers and home purchasers complete home furniture packages, guaranteed on-time..!! Home Automation mood lighting through to complete home AV distribution, CCTV, Security and anything else you'd like to wire in to your system... Our prices on AV can not be beaten and our service is second to none.

Samui Explorer:
How easy or difficult was it to set up AVID and find and train staff?

Dennis:
No business is easy wherever you are in the world and obtaining the correct staff is the hardest part of all. Being in Thailand has created its own problems with language and less than perfect infrastructure but we have tirelessly adapted our business model to be a better, more efficient and easier model for our customers and our staff.

Samui Explorer:
What are your long term plans for AVID and for the future?

Dennis:
We are building long-term plans with local businesses to ensure they have the very best of western service and professional expertise. We want to be the best Audio Visual & Interior Design Company on the island.

Samui Explorer:
What do you like best about working here on the island?

Dennis:
Constantly waking to the best views and best weather, in what is still one of the most beautiful places on earth even though I work so much these days it's rare that I actually get a chance to enjoy it. I also enjoy the real community spirit that bonds friendships.

Samui Explorer:
What do you love most about this country and Samui in particular?

Dennis:
It's a simple paradise that can be the easiest place in the world to live if you take everything in your stride? I find the people very much like Australians my other favourite race in that they always happy and polite with this beautiful life.

Samui Explorer:
If somebody is interested in Audio Visual equipment where can they find you on the island?

Dennis:
We have a show room opposite Tesco Lotus on the ring road on the way from Bophut to Chaweng. Our staff are very friendly and speak excellent English so please just feel free to pop a long for a chat, information or a quote.
